We are just entering the rainy season, and Akita Copy wanted to remind everyone in our tampa copier service area to put a surge suppressor on your copier or multifunction printer.

You may think this is a silly question, but an office copier rental is when you pay for to use an office machine on a month to month basis, for a certain amount of time.  Please don’t confuse a copier rental with a copier lease, because this is comparing apples and oranges.

Really, who cares.  What’s the difference???

An office copier lease usually gives you a cheaper monthly payment, because you are locked in for 36-63 months..Sometimes a copier lease feels like a lifetime.  If this is you, a copier rental may be the way to take your Tampa Bay business.

This option is good for:

  1. Risk averse customers
  2. Startup businesses with little or no credit history
  3. short term gatherings, say at the Tampa convention center
  4. Construction sites

So…what does this mean for me?

  2. Don’t expect to change copiers out 12 months into a 60 month lease.  You will be penalized big time.  If anyone tells you different, let us know and we’ll set you straight.

You did your due diligence, and got 3 copier quotes.

  • One was $300 for a 60 month lease.  Um…$18,000, are you kidding me?
  • Number two was a little desktop copier, that looked like it would stop working after a year…and he wanted $4000 for it!
  • The final quote was from a slick salesman, who was trying to say I get three free ipads, and 3 free printers(worth $16,000)  All I had to do was pay $16,000 for a $8000 new copier.  He said there were a few dealers who sold used copiers in Tampa, but they  were nobodies.

None of these three copier dealers gave me anything I wanted, so I called a local copier company…

I wanted to meet this guy in person, because I can read if he or she is trustworthy.  He came to my office around 9AM, sat down with me and listened to me spout off about what I didn’t want.  Then, I told him:  I want a reliable workhorse commercial copier that prints, scans, and faxes.  He said OK, have you thought about a used copier?  I looked at him like he was crazy.

There is no way I want someone else’s problem, I said.  He replied that this is a common concern, and that all of their used copy machines have very low usage on them, are at full factory specification, and best of all…come with a copier warranty BETTER than new machines!  Furthermore, the amount of copier repair calls were very similar to new copy machines.

But this was just the beginning.

He then told me the price.  I could get an almost identical used photocopier to what the Mr. Slick salesman quoted me (remember the $8000 copier for 16,000).  It would come with a warranty which actually covered more than these guys’ warranties, as well as a 5 year performance guarantee.

How much is a used photocopier, I asked??

$2995 plus tax.  And what’s the catch?  He said there were no so called free ipads or $16,000 printers.  He said he could raise the price for me, if that would make me feel better…I just laughed and signed the paperwork, and now 6 years later, the “used copier” in my Tampa office is still going strong.
